Genesis 4

Genesis

Chapter 4

1- And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man from the Lord.”

All souls come from the Lord.  Man here is “ish,” not adam; signifying this man is different and higher than adam.  This usually is used for more supernatural beings, implying Cain is not the son of Adam but rather, Satan.  See our note from Gen 2:23.

2- And she again bare his brother Abel.  And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

The word again is “yacaph”#3254 in the Hebrew dictionary of the Strong’s Concordance.  It means to add or augment, or to continue to do a thing.  So the manuscripts say Eve continued in labor,  which would make Cain and Abel twins.

Able was the son of Adam, but Cain was the son of the devil.  This is known as superfecundation or fraternal twins.  It is possible that twins have two different fathers, and even have been from different races.  See superfecundation in Wikipedia for more information on this subject.

The fact that both Cain and Able bring forth their offerings at the same time, to God in the next verses is further evidence that they are the same age and in fact twins.

3- And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

Notice it does not say first fruits as Abel offered.

4- And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.  And the LORD had respect unto Abel and  to his offering:

Here they both reach the age of accountability at the same time, further documenting the fact they are twins and of the same age.

5- But unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect.  And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6- And the LORD said unto Cain, “Why art thou wroth?  and why is thou countenance fallen?

7- If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?  and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.  And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”

8- And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

This documents the evil within Cain; to slay his own brother.  “Talked” in the manuscripts is simply “said.”  So Cain said to his brother let’s go to the field and he murdered him.  This implies that Cain plotted the murder of his brother, which is worse and more evil than an act of passion or emotion.

Jesus would remark in John 8:44, speaking to the Kenites (i.e. sons of Cain,) “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.  He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

Also Paul writes in the First Epistle of John 3:12, “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one (i.e. the devil), and slew his brother.

9- And the LORD said unto Cain, “Where is Abel thy brother?”  And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Here Cain lies directly to God.

10- And He said, “What hast thou done?  the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto Me from the ground.

Blood is #1818 in the Strong’s Concordance.  This is bloods, which means Cain also killed all of Abel’s unborn offspring.

11- And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

12- When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in earth.”

13- And Cain said unto the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14- Behold, Thou has driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from Thy face shall I be hid; and I shalt be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that everyone that findeth me shall slay me.”

This remark indicates there were other people on the earth at this time.  This verifies the sixth day creation of the races.

15- And the LORD said unto him, “Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.”  And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16- And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

The presence of the LORD is a reference to the tabernacle of 3:24.

The land of Nod is “Nowd” #5113 in the Hebrew Dictionary of the Strong’s Concordance.  It is vagrancy, the same as “nod” #5112, which is exile – wandering.  The prime root is #5110 “nuwd,” which means to wander, flee, disappear.

17- And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived; and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

Enoch is “Chanowk” # 2585 in the Strong’s.  It is from #2596 “chanak,” which is to narrow, to initiate or discipline: dedicate, train up.

The names of Cain’s genealogy are similar to Adam’s.  However, these are not the same people.

Note, according to Bullinger’s notes from the Companion Bible, a city was found under the brick platform on which Nipur, in south Babylonia, was built.

18- And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19- And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20- And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21- And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

Bullinger notes Jubal as a joyful sound in the Companion Bible.  He also notes that the organ is “ugab,” in Hebrew and is actually the well-known Pan’s pipe.

22- And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

Tubal-cain is flowing from Cain.  Naamah is pleasant.

These are the beginnings of the kenite tribes.  Kenites are the sons of Cain.

23- And Lamech said unto his wives, “Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24- If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.”

25- And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: “For God,” said she, “hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, who Cain slew.”

26- And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
